Call for maintainers: Fedora package tagger

The Fedora package tagger application is looking for new maintainers by April 5, 2018; otherwise, Fedora Infrastructure will retire the app.

Before DevConfCZ 2018, the Fedora Infrastructure team met to review the “state of the apps” in Fedora’s infrastructure. The fedora-tagger application is currently broken since the decision to retire PkgDB. The core Infrastructure team does not have bandwidth and time to focus on this application, since there are other areas to focus on at the upcoming Infrastructure Hackathon.

Fedora 28 release dates and schedule

With the release of Fedora 27, the Fedora 28 release schedule is falling into place. As of now, the current Fedora 28 release schedule is as follows.

Beta: 2018 April 3rd
Final release: 2018 May 1st
- “Rain” date: 2018 May 8th

These dates may change as development on Fedora 28 progresses, so always check the official schedule for the most accurate version of the Fedora release schedule.

Share your Fedora 2017 Year in Review

2017 was an active and busy year for Fedora. All year, contributors across all different sub-groups, working groups, special interest groups, and teams make the magic behind Fedora happen. With a project as large as Fedora, it is hard to keep others on different sides of the Project up to date. Fedora returns to HackMIT 2017

Every year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hosts an annual hackathon, HackMIT, for students around the world. Students gathered again for HackMIT 2017 on the weekend of September 16-17, 2017. During the weekend, students form teams with other students and work on projects to compete in various categories. Participants often release their projects under open source licenses at the end of the hackathon.

The Fedora Project participated as a sponsor for the second year in a row. Justin W. Flory and Mike DePaulo attended as Fedora Ambassadors to represent the project and the community.

Teaching metrics and contributor docs at Flock 2017

The Fedora Community Operations (CommOps) team held an interactive workshop during the annual Fedora contributor conference, Flock. Flock took place from August 29th to September 1st in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Justin W. Flory and Sachin Kamath represented the team in the workshop. CommOps spends a lot of time working with metrics and data tools available in Fedora, like fedmsg and datagrepper. Our workshop introduced some of the tools to work with metrics in Fedora and how to use them. With our leftover time, we discussed the role of contributor-focused documentation in the wiki and moving it to a more static place in Fedora documentation.

Fedora 27 release dates and schedule

With the recent release of Fedora 26, the Fedora 27 release schedule is falling into place. Also worth noting, starting with Fedora 27, there is no longer an Alpha release. As of now, the current Fedora 27 release schedule is as follows.

Beta: 2017 September 19th

“Rain” date: 2017 September 26th

Final release: 2017 October 24th

“Rain” date: 2017 October 31st

If you are interested in these roles, please add yourself to the lists of nominees before 23:59:59 UTC on July 31st, 2017! If you wish to nominate someone else, please consult with that person ahead of time. If you know someone who would be a good candidate, now is a great time to make sure they’re thinking about it.

Mission to understand: Fedora Diversity FAD 2017

The Fedora Diversity FAD (a.k.a. Fedora Activity Day, or a sprint) took place during the weekend of DevConf, 27-29 January. The original planning for this FAD started in August 2016, after the Flock 2016 conference. At Flock, the Diversity Team held a panel with open discussion about diversity and inclusion efforts in Fedora. Based on the feedback received during and after the panel, it was a priority for us to continue working on the objectives we had established before Flock. For the FAD, a majority of the Fedora Diversity Team was present along with a few others.

We made significant progress in accomplishing our larger objectives and to contribute to the Fedora Project mission and goals. The primary objectives we established for our FAD were completing plans for the demographic survey, building a campaign based on those results, and analyzing our Code of Conduct to find ways to better impact the community. This report covers each of these objectives, what we accomplished, and what we plan to do next.

Fedora speakers at FOSDEM 2017

Excited for FOSDEM 2017? FOSDEM, or the Free and Open Source Software Developers’ European Meeting, is held every year in late January or early February. This year, FOSDEM is taking place on February 4th and 5th. At this year’s conference, an estimated 8,000 or more attendees are expected. As one of the largest open source conferences in Europe, there are many Fedora Project developers and representatives attending the event. In addition to our community stand, you will find 24 speakers from the community giving talks over the weekend. This post gives a quick way for you to find out who is speaking and where to find them in FOSDEM!
