Building community at Open Source Conference Albania (OSCAL) 2018

From May 19-20, 2018, the local open source community in Tirana, Albania organized the fifth year of Open Source Conference Albania (OSCAL). For the fifth year, the Fedora Project participated as a sponsor of this regional conference. OSCAL focuses on topics of software freedom, open knowledge, free culture, and decentralization. It attracts a range of international speakers and sponsors to a mostly local Albanian audience.

What we did at OSCAL 2018

The Fedora Project and its contributors were present in multiple areas of the OSCAL experience. Fedora took part to encourage the growth of the local Fedora community, support the efforts of existing Fedora Ambassadors and contributors, and introduce different technologies that make Fedora unique.

Fedora organized a booth and held a release party to commemorate Fedora 28. Several contributors delivered talks and workshops during OSCAL. Additionally, several Fedora contributors delivered talks and workshops across both days of the conference.

Document Freedom Day Singapore 2018

On the 28 March 2018, Fedora Ambassadors organized Document Freedom Day in Singapore. Document Freedom Day is a day which like-minded folks who care about libre document formats gather to discuss and raise awareness of libre document formats. Libre document formats help reduce restrictions and vendor lock-ins. They are also an important tool that enables our right to read freely.

As someone passionate about freedom and individual privacy, I was excited about this event. Along with my ambassador mentor, Herson, we helped to organize this event.

Fedora meetup at Pune – March 2018

Long time we did not had any meetup at Pune, Maharashtra, India, so we decided to get started again. Details about this meetup are available at Fedora Wiki page.

Planning for meetup started 1 month before. Initially Ompragash proposed to have meetup.com account for Fedora Pune to get more awareness. Later dropped this plan, since this is not only Fedora Pune level topic but applicable for all Fedora events.

Event started well in time.

15 Attendees were present including college students.
Ompragash welcomed all the attendees and had a short introduction from everyone. He delivered his first talk “Telling the Fedora Story”, in this he explained how Fedora project started.
Parag explained different ways to contribute in Fedora in his talk. He kept on answering queries in between, it was engaging session.

Ohio Linux Festival, Hyatt Regency Columbus, Ohio 29-30 September 2017

The Fedora community has been a steadfast supporter of this event for the past 6 years. Ohio Linux Festival is the only major Linux community event that is located in the Northern Midwest region, with no Texas Linux Festival this year it is the only major event in the Midwest. The event attendance in the previous few years has gone down due to venue changes and event staff changes, but in light of 2017 the event brought just under a thousand registered enthusiasts as the OLF event president Beth Lynn Eicher (also a Fedora Ambassador) informed us the morning of 30 September while we were getting set up, which this did not count the walk-ins that showed up the morning of the EXPO opening. So the attendance was most impressive as compared to the previous year’s events and could be soundly stated that there was upwards of 1100 at the event.

FOSS Wave with Fedora at KGISL, Coimbatore

Recently, I was invited by Prem to NASSCOM to give a brief talk on FOSS and Technology as part of the FOSS Wave community. Prem is doing a great job there by putting his effort in helping students from Tier2 and Tier3 cities. Around twenty enthusiastic students were selected and invited to Bengaluru to take part in such events. Mine was one of them. I conducted a GitHub session after Intro to FOSS and a brief intro about Fedora Project.

Fedora 27 Release Party at Mexico City

On December 8, 2017, the ambassadors in Mexico City, Efren Robledo (srkraken) and Alberto Rodríguez (bt0dotninja) hosted a Fedora 27 Release Party. The party took place on the UAM Azcapotzalco in the basic sciences and engineering division. We had three main activities: Introducing Fedora 27 talk , Q&A session and a little trivia session with some gifts.
