Fedora speakers at FOSDEM 2017

Excited for FOSDEM 2017? FOSDEM, or the Free and Open Source Software Developers’ European Meeting, is held every year in late January or early February. This year, FOSDEM is taking place on February 4th and 5th. At this year’s conference, an estimated 8,000 or more attendees are expected. As one of the largest open source conferences in Europe, there are many Fedora Project developers and representatives attending the event. In addition to our community stand, you will find 24 speakers from the community giving talks over the weekend. This post gives a quick way for you to find out who is speaking and where to find them in FOSDEM!

FOSS Wave: FOSS Camp SJCE in Mysore

A couple of weekends ago, Kanika Murarka and I (Sumantro Mukherjee) went down to the Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in Mysore, India to give a talk on GitHub and web virtual reality (VR) on their annual open source fest, FOSS Camp.

Fedora 25 was released on Nov 15, 2016. It contained many of the latest stable versions of development results from free and open source community at the time.

Fedora Ambassadors, Cheng-Chia Tseng (Zerng07) and Freedomknight, organized this release party and held it at A+A Space in Taipei.

Flock 2017 bids are now being accepted (due 28 Feb 2017)

It is time to start the bid process for this year’s Flock. This year we are back in North America for Flock 2017. If you’d like to help host the event in your city, it’s time to start putting together a bid. To find out what you need to do, read the wiki page. Bids are due by February 28, 2017, so do not wait to start. It takes more time than you may realize to compile all the required information for a good bid.

Tips and advice for Flock 2017 planning

Keep in mind that committing to help plan a conference is a lot of work and shouldn’t be approached lightly. It’s a big time commitment, and as the local contact, you’re critical to the success of the event. Flock has been held successfully on college campuses and in hotels. We need to make sure that the space will work for both the conference and be affordable. Details are on the wiki page.

Fedora 25 Release Party: Novi Sad, Serbia

Release party this way!

Another awesome Fedora release, and another awesome Release Party in Novi Sad!

The party took place, like last time, on the Faculty of Science, University of Novi Sad in the Department of Mathematics and Informatics. To be even more precise, it’s about three minutes away from our Fedora-powered computer lab! About forty people (among who was a Fedora ambassador from Uruguay) attended! We had four talks about different topics regarding Fedora, security, and hackerspaces.

Fedora at PyCon CZ 2016

The last weekend of October was perfect timing for the annual Python community gathering in Brno, Czech Republic for PyCon CZ. Organized by a wonderful group of people from the PyCon CZ community, it is the second PyCon in the Czech Republic to gather Pythonistas from the whole country and abroad, share knowledge, learn and chat over a cup of coffee. And of course Fedora was there to make sure that everyone knows how Fedora loves Python.

Flock Stories 2016, Episode 3: Brian Exelbierd

What can you do to get the most out of your time at events like Flock? Today, we hear from one of the main organizers of this year’s Flock conference, Brian Exelbierd. Brian is a multi-disciplinary Fedora contributor who dabbles in community building, documentation writing, and technical problem solving. Most recently, Brian took up his new role as the Fedora Community Action and Impact Coordinator (FCAIC). He also has some humble advice for folks looking for hints on how to give their Fedora contribution powers a boost!

Fedora 25 is currently in Beta status. With another Fedora release not so far away, it’s time for the Ambassadors to plan their activities around the release. The most common activity for Ambassadors to do around a release is organize release parties. A release party is also a great way for other contributors in the community to get involved with advocacy in their local regions. Learn how to organize a release party and get a badge for it in this article.
