It was another lazy Saturday with a rare sight of empty Bangalore roads. This FOSS Wave event in Bangalore had been in planning for almost a month. Finally, here we were on September 10th, 2016 in front of the almost a century old structure of University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.

Five speakers reached the venue by 9:30am. We were to talk in two different sessions starting from 10:30am until 4:00pm on the following topics.

FOSS, its philosophy, ethics and importance
Fedora and contributing to the Fedora Project
Eminent women in the history of tech and FOSS
Basics of git and GitHub

FOSS Wave: Goa, India

This post details how we executed planned activities for Internet of Things (IoT) in Goa, India. First, thanks to Espressotive (headed by Sudhir Shetty and CIBA) for doing all the prep work from registration to our accommodation. Over a span of three days, more than 400 students from three colleges and universities attended the event.

HackMIT meets Fedora

HackMIT is the annual hackathon event organized by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. HackMIT 2016 took place on September 17th and 18th, 2016. This year, the Fedora Project partnered with Red Hat as sponsors for the hackathon. Fedora Ambassadors Charles Profitt and Justin W. Flory attended to represent the project and help mentor top students from around the country in a weekend of learning and competitive hacking. Fedora engaged with a new audience of students from various universities across America and even the globe.

Test Day: Internationalization (i18n) features of Fedora 25

We do have a badge for participating!

We have new, interesting i18n features (changes) introduced in Fedora 25. Those are as follows:

Emoji typing – In the computing world, it’s rare to have person not know about emoji. Before, it was difficult to type emoji in Fedora. Now, we have an emoji typing feature in Fedora 25.
Unicode 9.0 – With each release, Unicode introduces new characters and scripts to its encoding standard. We have a good number of additions in Unicode 9.0. Important libraries are updated to get the new additions into Fedora.
IBus typing booster Multilingual support – IBus typing booster started providing multilingual support (typing more than one language using single IME – no need to switch) from Fedora 24, but the UI setup was not ready. Fedora 25 has this ready.

Other than this, we also need to make sure all other languages works well specifically input, output, storage and printing.

Though it is a test day, we normally keep it on for the whole week. If you don’t have time tomorrow, feel free to complete it in the coming few days and upload your test results.

Fedora Media Writer Test Day – 2016-09-20

Today, Tuesday, 2016-09-20, is the Fedora Media Writer Test Day! As part of this planned Change for Fedora 25, the Fedora graphical USB writing tool is being extensively revised and rewritten. This tool was formerly called the “Live USB Creator” and is now re=branded as “Fedora Media Writer”.

Why test the Media Writer

The idea is the new tool will be sufficiently capable, reliable, and cross-platform to be the primary download for Fedora Workstation 25. The main ‘flow’ of the Workstation download page will run through the tool instead of giving you a download link to the ISO file and various instructions for using it in different ways. This would be a pretty big change, and of course, it would be a bad idea to do it if the tool isn’t ready.

So this is an important Test Day! We’ll be testing the new version (Fedora, Windows, and macOS) of the tool to see whether it’s working well enough and catch any remaining issues. It’s also pretty easy to join in. All you’ll need is a USB stick you don’t mind overwriting and a system (or ideally more than one!) you can test booting the stick on (but you don’t need to make any permanent changes to it).

Fedora 24 release party in Paris

On September 3rd, the French team hosted a release party for Fedora 24 in “La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie” (Science and Industry Museum) in Paris, France. It is later than most release parties, but July and August are two months of vacation in France and we wanted to target as many people as possible (by the way, it allowed us to proudly announce the Fedora 25 Alpha!).

Event Report: Fedora Women Day 2016, Kolkata

A two-day workshop on women in free software and Fedora Women Day were held on the 15th and 16th of July 2016 at the Netaji Subhash Engineering College in Kolkata, India. This event was jointly organized by Ubuntu Women Project, Fedora Project, and the university. It was substantially sponsored by Ubuntu Women Project. The goal of the workshop was also to get new participants interested, improve the level of participation by women, and explore new avenues of free software community development. Given the factors involved, the Workshop on Women in Free Software / Fedora Women Day 2016 (shortened to WWFS-FWD’2016) was a successful one.

Reviving Labyrinth

I have planned to do this for more than two months, but we didn’t have any computer science club in my college. If it was for one event, we could have done it separate, but I wanted to organize multiple workshops (open source, mobile app development, website development, competitions, robotics etc). Thus, we needed a proper platform to easily organize the events without bothering too many people.

Starting the call focused on the Internet of Things

This article is a follow-up to an earlier article on the Community Blog: Women in technology: Fedora campus presence.

This week, we took our initiative further. We guided the new women contributors on one of the bleeding edge technologies according to their interest. Sumantro Mukherjee helped me guide the contributors. Some contributors were interested in Internet of Things (IoT) while some wanted to learn Web Development as bleeding edge. So, we decided to have two different calls in a row.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The first hangout call was on Internet of Things. The contributors were explained the meaning and the structure of how IoT is implemented. It was done with the help of a presentation prepared by Sumantro. After going through the details and theory about IoT, we talked about the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. We went through a little intro and application part of the devices. We further explained the concept with the help of a little demo of the project.
