Fedora 33 Upgrade Test Day 2020-09-21

Moday 2020-09-21, is the Fedora 33 Upgrade Test Day! As part of the preparation for Fedora 33, we need your help to test if everything runs smoothly!

Why Upgrade Test Day?

We’re approaching the Beta Release date for Fedora 33. Most users will be upgrading to Fedora 33 and this test day will help us understand if everything is working perfectly. This test day will cover both a GNOME graphical upgrade and an upgrade done using DNF .

We need your help!

All the instructions are on the wiki page, so please read through and come help us test! As always, the event will be in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC.

Ambassadors Revamp Volunteer Kick-Off

Fedora Mindshare has been actively trying to help Taskforce leads put together volunteers who will be helping revamp the Fedora Ambassador
Program. As a part of this effort, the FCIAC and Taskforce lead put out a survey to folks who expressed interest.

Contributor discount for Lenovo ThinkPad laptops with Fedora Workstation!

It’s been a little longer than we hoped, but Lenovo is now shipping the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 with Fedora Workstation preinstalled, purchasable via their website. (Currently US and Canada only, but will be world-wide. Also only this model for now, with the other models to follow.)

We’ll have some another announcements, but I wanted to share something important for Fedora contributors. There is a special Linux community portal, and if you purchase through that portal, you’ll get a (pretty significant!) discount. You just need to log in with your accountname@fedoraproject.org address (something you should have if you qualify for “CLA+1“).

This is live now: simply go to https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/Linux in the US or www.lenovo.com/ca/en/linuxca in Canada, and create an account using your Fedora email alias. Thanks to Lenovo for offering this to all Fedora contributors as a way of giving back.

Note that you must use this portal to get the extra discount. Simply using an @fedoraproject.org email address isn’t enough.

Fedora has been participating in Google Summer Of Code for a long time and we have had good experience with this. Our process is to call for mentors on mailing lists and community blogs after we apply for the the program. But this doesn’t mean you have to wait for the call for mentors, you can anytime propose a project and we work with you to polish it and try to find the best place for it (be it outreacy or GSoC). We gather project ideas on Mentored Project issues.
Thank you everyone for submitting a project idea in the past and we are looking forward to have more of participation from you all.

We mourn the loss of John McDonough

We learned this week of the passing of John McDonough (jjmcd). John was a long-time contributor to the Fedora Project, and we are sad to hear of his passing. John contributed heavily to the Documentation team, sharing his knowledge with a global user community. John didn’t just write documentation, he also mentored new contributors. He was a patient and caring mentor, and our community is worse for his loss.

When I first became a Fedora contributor 11 years ago, John was one of the people who welcomed me into the Docs team. His guidance helped me become a better contributor. Although he stepped back from contributing a few years ago, his impact continues.

John’s passion for open source was matched by his passion for amateur radio. His contributions to our Amateur Radio Guide helped many hams get the most out of their hobby. WB8RCR, WB8RCR, WB8RCR, SK

Fedora Join SIG 2019 retrospective

There are five active members animating the SIG. One new contributor asked to join the SIG in 2019. And other people not formally part of the SIG but that welcome new people and hang around in the Telegram group, proposing new ideas and giving feedback on various topics.

We get in touch with new people practically every day.

The majority of newcomers get in touch via Telegram, someone via IRC and the fewer in the mailing list.

Come Socialize at the Fedora Social Hour, Again!

COVID-19 is getting pretty real, with social distancing, shelter-in-place, and lockdown orders in effect in areas around the world. Some of us are perhaps getting sick of the company we are stuck with, and others of us are feeling pretty isolated without any company at all.

Fedora Project Leader Matthew Miller and contributor Neal Gompa had the idea for a Fedora Social Hour where folks could video chat in and get a little (virtual) human contact and conversation.

We will be hosting this social meetup on matrix.org! No need to download a client, although you’ll need to sign up for an account to participate if you do not already have one. You can view the chat before signing up to see if you want to participate. Here is the URL:

Last week we did a trial run using Mozilla Hubs. It’s a fun little VR-based chat system with some interesting quirks! One of the requests we had was if there could be some kind of music playing in the background. It looks like Riot.im has a built-in Spotify integration, as well as Jitsi and Etherpad integration. So we’ll be playing around with and testing these goodies out!
