Flock interviews: User Feedback on Modularity

As you probably know, there is annual convention called Flock. This year’s is happening in Cape Cod, Hyannis, MA and will begin the morning of Tuesday, August 29. Sessions will continue each day until midday on Friday, September 1.

I have asked all of the session leaders from Flock some questions.

And now you are about to read one of the responses.

User Feedback on Modularity by Mary Clarke

Briefly describe your session:

I will actually have 6, 1-hour sessions during the course of Flock. They will be in the hour before the lunch break and the  hour after the lunch break on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The reason we are doing this is that my sessions are not typical talks, in fact, they are not talks at all. You could describe them as focus groups intended to obtain end-user feedback. These sessions are intended to be highly interactive where we will demo functionality and ask for attendees to respond with their thoughts. I have provided more information through my answers below.

What does your talk focus on?

My talk will focus on the Fedora Layered Image Build System (FLIBS), the challenges multi-arch has brought to the container ecosystem, how we will integrate FLIBS with other Fedora initiatives, and what this all means for Fedora users and contributors.

Designing Fedora Badges by Marie Nordin

What is the goal of your session at Flock?

The goal of my session at Flock is to educate and guide attendees through the process of creating Fedora Badges artwork. I would like to help Fedorans who are interested in being artistically creative find a fun and useful outlet with active mentors to guide them. Another goal of my session is to empower contributors to have the ability to create badge artwork for their events and projects within Fedora.

LxQT Test Day: 2017-08-17

Tuesday, 2017-08-17, is the DNF 2.0 Test Day! As part of this planned Change for Fedora 26, we need your help to test LxQT!

Why test LxQT?

LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment.

We hope to see whether it’s working well enough and catch any remaining issues.

We need your help!

All the instructions are on the wiki page, so please read through and come help us test! As always, the event will be in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC.

Help promote the Test Day and share the article in your own circles! Use any of the buttons below to help spread the word.

A proposal: Ambassadors and Fedora strategy

Fedora is big. We are a huge community of people with diverse interests. We have different ideas for what we want to build, and we want different things in return from our collective effort. At the same time, we are one project with shared goals and limited resources. We are more effective in this competitive world when we agree on common goals and work towards those, rather than everyone going in the direction each person thinks is best individually.¹

The Fedora Council is tasked with taking community input and shaping this shared strategy. As part of this, we’ve written a new mission statement and have a draft overview page presenting it. We’ve said for a while that we want the work of Fedora Ambassadors to align with this mission directly. We’re getting feedback, though, that this is easier to say than to put into practice, which is understandable because, by nature, mission statements are high-level.

So, I have a proposal. As part of the Fedora Council’s charter, we have Fedora Objectives:

The Fedora Atomic Working Group is changing where you participate in our portion of the Fedora community. IRC, mailing lists, and more are all moving. Read on so that you know where to find us.

Atomic WG and Fedora Cloud

The Atomic Working Group is responsible for Fedora’s new container cloud platform, currently consisting of Fedora Atomic Host and the Fedora Layered Images Build System & Repository (FLIBS). As Atomic is now one of the three primary spins for Fedora, the WG spends most of its time on releases and integrating new container technologies into the OS. We are building the immutable infrastructure of the future, helping make Fedora the best free platform for automating thousands of servers.
