Heroes of Fedora (HoF) – F25 Beta

This installment of the Heroes of Fedora series will focus on work done on Fedora 25 Beta release.

Hello fellow testers, and welcome back to the Heroes of Fedora – F25 Beta edition! In this post we’ll look at who-did-what during the push to F25 – Beta! Before we begin however, something has come to our attention that we need to clear up! Since Fedora 24 Alpha, we have no longer used the TC (Test Candidate) system and have switched to using nightly-test-validation to document testing on branched releases. When this change occurred early in the F24 – Alpha release cycle, the program we have used to generate test statistics was not aware of the change and some of the data it reported back for F24 – Alpha, Beta, Final and F25 – Alpha was erroneous. This has been noted and fixed, so the results from now on should be accurate. We’re sorry for this error and will make sure that this does not affect the stats into the future.

With that out of the way, let’s move on to our Heroes of Fedora F25 – Beta!

Thursday, November 3rd, 2016, is the Better Switchable Graphics Support Test Day! As part of this planned Change for Fedora 25, we need your help to test Better Switchable Graphics Support!

Why test Better Switchable Graphics Support?

All modern laptops have a graphics processing unit (GPU) integrated into their processor (the integrated GPU). Some models also have a more powerful, dedicated GPU (dGPU), also called switchable graphics. The goal of this feature is to improve Fedora’s support for such laptops.

We need your help to test Switchable Graphics Support!

All the instructions are on the wiki page, so please read through and come help us test! As always, the event will be in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC. Be sure to join us in channel on Thursday!

Internationalization test day report for Fedora 25

Like every Fedora release, in preparation for Fedora 25 release, the Globalization Team organized an Internationalization (i18n) Test Day on September 28. It was nice to see that people came from all over the world to participate in this test day event. Since the early morning, internationalization engineers were present in #fedora-test-day and #fedora-g11n channel to help people testing on this day.

Fedora at Ohio Linuxfest 2016

This is the Ambassador Report for Ben & Cathy Williams for the Ohio Linuxfest 2016.

We arrived at the our hotel around 1PM on Friday. After checking in we headed over to find the new site in the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The first things we noticed was the Columbus Convention Center is doing a major renovation and one of those renovations was they removed the escalators from the food court to the second floor. At first we thought this may be a issue to move the event stuff in but there was an elevator close by. Also no signage for OLF in the Food Court area. After getting off the elevator on the second floor there was a sign pointing around the corner to the Ohio Linuxfest registration table. This year Ohio Linuxfest charged $10 for general attendees (free to students with student ID). We checked in and out our badges (yes insert favorite Blazing Saddles joke here). We walked down to the Vendor Expo hall which this year had a grand total of 28 exhibitors (see website for vendor lists). While the Expo was setup ready for Vendors to move in but the Vendor Expo was not open to the public on Friday.

Fedora at LinuxCon Europe 2016

The Linux Foundation, the organizer of the conference, says the following about LinuxCon:

“It is the place to learn from the best and the brightest, delivering content from the leading maintainers, developers and project leads in the Linux community and from around the world.”

The Fedora community has been at all European editions since 2011 and this is a report from the last one, which took place on Oct 4-6.

What does Factory 2.0 mean for Modularity?

Fedora 25 Supplementary Wallpapers: Vote now!

At the end of August, the submission phase for Fedora 25 Supplementary Wallpapers opened. Now, the submission phase closed and the voting phase is now open. If you have a FAS account and meet the CLA+1 group requirement, you can cast your vote in Nuancier.

Wallpapers for Fedora 25

We have 113 contributions from 80 different contributors and awarded 73 badges for submissions. This compares to 124 valid submissions from Fedora 24. In case your badge was not awarded, ping gnokii in #fedora-design on freenode.

As for past contests, a lot of the participants made their first contribution to Fedora. We will continue to improve Nuancier and the submission process for supplementary wallpapers. We will also try to improve quality of submissions. We already improved with limiting the amount of submissions. We also had longer phases for submissions and the time for the voting is also longer as before.

Be sure to cast your vote before October 23rd, 2016 to have a say in what wallpapers are included! By participating, you can also receive a limited edition badge too.
