Building more inclusive open source community at Fedora

(This blog is about the Fedora Diversity Team and what we were up to this Flock 2017 held at Cape Cod, USA)

Apart from the keynotes, hack fests and some delicious sea food at this Flock, Diversity Team had a session and decided to gain direction, move a little faster, break a few barriers and do some other amazing things.  I’m writing it down here for people who weren’t there in the room with us.

Organizing a Fedora Women Day 2017 event

Fedora Women Day (FWD) is a day of celebration dedicated to the female contributors of the Fedora Project. During this day of celebration, local communities around the world will gather to present the accomplishments of the women that are part of the Fedora Project and thank them. FWD is a great chance to promote the participation of more women, bring together contributors and raise awareness about the gender gap in tech communities. This day is being celebrated across the community in order to show the importance of having women involved in open source projects, such as Fedora.

Fedora was at PyCon SK 2017

At the second weekend in March 2017, Fedora had a booth at PyCon SK, a community-organized conference for the Python programming language held in Bratislava, Slovakia. The event happened for the second time this year, and it happened with Fedora again.

PyCon SK 2017 took 3 days. First day most of the talks were in Slovak (or Czech) and Michal Cyprian presented problems that my arise when users use sudo pip and how we want to solve those problems in Fedora by making sudo pip safe again. During the lightnings talks section, I presented about Elsa, a tool that helps to create static web pages using Flask. Elsa powers up the Fedora Loves Python website.

The next day was mostly English. Another Fedora contributors Jona Azizaj and Petr Viktorin had their talks. Jona presented about building Python communities and empowering women. Petr’s talk was about the balance of Python (constraints and conventions versus the freedom to do whatever you want) and its impact on the language and the community. Petr also metacoached the Django Girls workshop on Sunday.

But Fedora’s presence was not just through people. Fedora had a booth filled with swag. We gave out all our remaining Fedora Loves Python stickers, plenty of Fedora 25 DVDs, pins, stickers, pens, buttons… We had couple of Proud Fedora User t-shirts available and plenty of Fedora users asked for them, so we decided to come up with a quiz about Fedora and a raffle to decide who gets them.

Lot of the visitors were already familiar with Fedora or even Fedora users this year, which was quite different in compassion with the previous year, where a lot of people were actually asking what Fedora is. <joke>Maybe because we already explained it a year ago, now every visitor already uses Fedora?</joke>

Join us to plan the event : LGBT Awareness Day, 17th May!

What binds us behind the IRC screens and pagure issues, is an unrelenting drive to make Fedora a better resource for those out there. What divides us is nothing but a difference of opinions on how we want to execute this. All through this, it is through differences we conclude to the best option and through diversity in the community, we capture all perspectives.

As an initiative to preserve and encourage this diversity, the Fedora Diversity Team plans to organize an event for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. We are looking at it as an opportunity for a virtual community meet-up.

An inclusive event cannot be built without being inclusive of all the voices of the community. We would like to solicit your ideas on how we can make this event effective in spreading awareness and building a more inclusive Fedora community. You may suggest tasks that we can do together, talks, workshops, badges, blogs, videos, messages, or anything else on your mind.

We would like to look at this journey as allies, the community and its people. We both build each other stronger. All your thoughts, opinions, feedback or just a +1 will be deeply valuable to us. Please do so in the following ticket:

Mission to understand: Fedora Diversity FAD 2017

The Fedora Diversity FAD (a.k.a. Fedora Activity Day, or a sprint) took place during the weekend of DevConf, 27-29 January. The original planning for this FAD started in August 2016, after the Flock 2016 conference. At Flock, the Diversity Team held a panel with open discussion about diversity and inclusion efforts in Fedora. Based on the feedback received during and after the panel, it was a priority for us to continue working on the objectives we had established before Flock. For the FAD, a majority of the Fedora Diversity Team was present along with a few others.

We made significant progress in accomplishing our larger objectives and to contribute to the Fedora Project mission and goals. The primary objectives we established for our FAD were completing plans for the demographic survey, building a campaign based on those results, and analyzing our Code of Conduct to find ways to better impact the community. This report covers each of these objectives, what we accomplished, and what we plan to do next.

Outreachy with Fedora, Fall 2016

What is Outreachy?

GNOME Outreachy is a global program that offers historically underrepresented people of gender and race stipends to write code for several participating FOSS projects . Inspired by Google Summer Of Code, Outreachy offers participants hands-on internships for contributing to open source projects.

In 2016, the Outreachy internship dates are from December 6, 2016 to March 6, 2017. Participants work remotely from home while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and collaborating within their project’s community.

Why open source and Fedora?

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software that gives the user the freedom to use, share, study, and improve it. FOSS contributors believe that this is the best way to develop software because it benefits society, creates a fun collaborative community around a project, and allows anyone to make creative changes that reach many people.

Fedora is participating in Outreachy 2016, with a goal to welcome underrepresented minorities to contribute to the project.  Fedora mentors Outreachy interns and helps them get a hands-on experience with developing for an open source project.

What is the Fedora Code of Conduct?

We all live in a society. Every society has customs, values, and mores. This is how homo sapiens are different from other species. Since our childhood, in school, then college, and then at work, we follow a shared set of social values. This shared set of values creates a peaceful world. In the open source world, we strive for values that lead to us all being welcoming, generous, and thoughtful. We may differ in opinions or sometimes disagree with each other, but we try to keep the conversation focused on the ideas under discussion, not the person in the discussion.

Fedora is an excellent example of an open source society where contributors respect each other and have healthy discussions, whether they agree or disagree on all topics. This is a sign of a healthy community. Fedora is a big project with contributors and users from different parts of the world . This creates a diverse community of different skills, languages, ages, colors, cultural values, and more. Although it is rare in Fedora, sometimes miscommunication happens and this can result in situations where the discussion moves from the idea to the person.

WiTNY 2016: Event Report

January has been a rather busy month. The Women in Technology New York (WiTNY) conference was my first big conference of the new year. It is also one that falls squarely in line with one of CommOps’ big priorities for this year to increase the involvement of women and underrepresented groups within our project.

Using regular posts to social media, I was able to keep a sort of log of segments of the WiTNY journey.
