HackMIT meets Fedora

HackMIT is the annual hackathon event organized by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. HackMIT 2016 took place on September 17th and 18th, 2016. This year, the Fedora Project partnered with Red Hat as sponsors for the hackathon. Fedora Ambassadors Charles Profitt and Justin W. Flory attended to represent the project and help mentor top students from around the country in a weekend of learning and competitive hacking. Fedora engaged with a new audience of students from various universities across America and even the globe.

Fedora 24 release party in Paris

On September 3rd, the French team hosted a release party for Fedora 24 in “La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie” (Science and Industry Museum) in Paris, France. It is later than most release parties, but July and August are two months of vacation in France and we wanted to target as many people as possible (by the way, it allowed us to proudly announce the Fedora 25 Alpha!).

I have planned to do this for more than two months, but we didn’t have any computer science club in my college. If it was for one event, we could have done it separate, but I wanted to organize multiple workshops (open source, mobile app development, website development, competitions, robotics etc). Thus, we needed a proper platform to easily organize the events without bothering too many people.

Starting the call focused on the Internet of Things

This article is a follow-up to an earlier article on the Community Blog: Women in technology: Fedora campus presence.

This week, we took our initiative further. We guided the new women contributors on one of the bleeding edge technologies according to their interest. Sumantro Mukherjee helped me guide the contributors. Some contributors were interested in Internet of Things (IoT) while some wanted to learn Web Development as bleeding edge. So, we decided to have two different calls in a row.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The first hangout call was on Internet of Things. The contributors were explained the meaning and the structure of how IoT is implemented. It was done with the help of a presentation prepared by Sumantro. After going through the details and theory about IoT, we talked about the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. We went through a little intro and application part of the devices. We further explained the concept with the help of a little demo of the project. Open source is the new trend. When major corporations are moving towards open architecture by using open source tools and even pushing their internal projects into open source, it makes your contributions especially worthy. But before starting with contributing, many people face the same common set of questions. How they can start, how should they introduce themselves in the community, and where they can contribute. To answer these questions, I planned a session on free and open source software (FOSS) and Fedora at the Northern India Engineering College in Delhi, India.

During the planning phase, I got in touch with Sumantro, who is himself an open source enthusiast and contributing to various open source projects including the Fedora Project. With his help, we planned the agenda for the session and gathered the resources to conduct the session. On 12th August, 2016, this session on FOSS and Fedora was conducted to:

Fedora 24 Release Party in Singapore

As you might know, Fedora released its 24th version at the end of June! Recently, the Fedorans in Singapore had a party to celebrate the release. The release party was not only to celebrate its release, but also to commemorate Fedora’s open source journey so far. We invited people from different diverse background to join us for a night of fun and open conversations (Singapore is a cosmopolitan country!)

We had a RSVP of over 50 folks and expected more to join in. We set up the Fedora banners and were also ready to give out DVDs and stickers. However, on the day itself, there was a dropout rate of 60% and only around fifteen folks turned up. Most of the folks that turned up were students interested in learning more about Fedora. Nevertheless, it was a cozy and warm party that everyone felt pretty comfortable with.

A start of a big journey!

Furthering the efforts of some work around building a strong, tight-knit FOSS community around Fedora, I approached a few people from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. I figured out the scope to talk about Fedora and Fedora quality assurance (QA). The target audience was bringing more college students from Bhopal into open source and Fedora.

The meeting was short and simple. The audience was well-versed with free and open source software (FOSS) and many of them are presently contributing to various FOSS projects. We started off talking about how contributing to FOSS makes contributors industry-ready. As the cog wheel of time revolved, we shifted to “how people can join” the Fedora Project and start contributing!

Over the past few months, many of us in the Bangalore open source community have focused our efforts of writing test cases for Fedora, organizing a few sessions where one can learn about testing, and how we can do things together. All this while, it has been fun: I’ve met new people, learned things, and realized that sharing even small pieces of knowledge and experiences makes it easier for newcomers to feel welcome.

At one point when Fedora 24 was released, it was exciting as we were closely involved with Fedora release validation testing and so we wanted to put together a release party. All open source projects encourage their communities to celebrate software release and similar milestones. Ours was a simple plan! We were having a really good time learning together and we wanted to get more people to know that there is a better way to gain knowledge: by sharing and working together.

Fedora 24 Release Party: SFVLUG Event Report

On July 2nd, 2016, the San Fernando Valley Linux User Group (SFVLUG) in Lake Balboa, California, celebrated the release of Fedora 24 at their regular meeting. Fedora Ambassador Perry Rivera (FAS: lajuggler) helped coordinate these efforts at their regular meetup at Denny’s. To help celebrate the launch of Fedora 24, Perry brought some install media and a Fedora cake. The release party helped introduce Fedora 24 to a new group of users by providing them with the software and help to get Fedora 24 for themselves. This report details the release party events with SFVLUG and the impact from the event.

Southeast Linux Fest (SELF) 2016

The Southeast Linux Fest (SELF) is an annual Linux conference in the southeast region of the United States. This year, the conference ran from June 10 – 12, 2016. SELF was located in the Sheraton by the airport in Charlotte, NC. As expected, the booth site was the same as the earlier years while at this venue. Booth placement plays a vital role in visibility and accessibility. When presentations finish, attendees come out and the first booth visible is Fedora.
