OSCON 2016 Expo Hall Booth Report

On Tuesday I attended OSCON‘s Open Container Day with members of the OpenShift team and the CentOS team. This turned out to be an interesting outing and I got pulled into an interview on TheNewStack with CentOS member Jim Perrin to discuss the Fedora and CentOS respective docker layered image build systems and tooling. This was a great opportunity to explain what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what we hope to provide to the community. This day was roughly half and half tech overview of different container tech and sales pitches from various companies. Which is somewhat understandable, since it’s a sponsored day event. I helped man the OpenShift table before getting pulled into TheNewStack interview.

Fedora 24: Let’s have a party!

Fedora 24 just recently entered Beta status a couple of weeks ago. With another Fedora release not so far away, it’s time for the Ambassadors to plan their activities around the release. The most common activity for Ambassadors to do around a release is namely the Release Parties. A release party is also a great way for other contributors in the community to get involved with advocacy in their local regions.

BrickHack 2016 and Fedora: Event Report

Over the weekend of March 5th – 6th, 2016, the Fedora Project sponsored BrickHack 2016. BrickHack 2016 is a hackathon event hosted at the Rochester Institute of Technology. What exactly is BrickHack? The organizers describe it as the following:

March 5-6 ignites a weekend devoted to 400 designers and coders sinking 24 hours into learning, building, and creating unique projects. Mentors and industry representatives will also join the fray to lend expertise and share wisdom. The event will take place in RIT’s Gordon Field House for a centralized, communal hacking experience. Expect food, swag, and timeless brick-laden memories.

As an event sponsor, the Fedora Ambassadors of North America had a table for the event. The Ambassadors offered mentorship and assistance to BrickHack 2016 programmers, gave away some free Fedora swag, and offered an introduction to Linux, open source, and the community. This report is a recollection of some highlights from the event and also focuses on the impact we made as an event sponsor.

Out of the six billion people in the world, only 339 million have English as a first language. The importance of English in global business increases the number of English speakers, but the people learning are taking English on as a second language. A notable number of users prefer products in their own language. Japan is a common example of this.

In the Fedora Globalization (G11n) group, we are making this happen. The efforts are huge, and kudos to all our contributors.If you are a non-English user in Fedora and want to help improve translations in your native language, this is your time to contribute! A virtual Fedora translation sprint is coming up soon for Fedora 24 GUI applications.

Fedora was at PyCon SK 2016

At the second weekend in March 2016, Fedora had a booth at PyCon SK, a community-organized conference for the Python programming language held in Bratislava, Slovakia. The event happened for the first time this year, and we made sure it happened with Fedora.

This is a friendly reminder that the Flock submission deadline is less than a month away, on April 8th 2016. If you have been thinking of submitting a talk or workshop, now would be a great time to get that sent in.

The Council is particularly interested in talks that address any of the current Council Objectives as well as discussions around new Objectives people would like to see. Of course, innovation happens outside of Fedora itself and we’d love
to hear about that as well. If you’ve been using Fedora as a foundation for other interesting Free and Open Source software and/or community work, consider submitting a talk or workshop around it.

FOSDEM 2016: Event Report

Organizing the #DistroDevRoom

As a longtime FOSS advocate and conference-goer, I have woefully from afar followed the press and event coverage after FOSDEM for many years, wishing on my lucky stars that someday, I too might be able to attend this premier FOSS event in Europe. And this year, finally, I got the opportunity to not only attend, but to help organize the Distributions DevRoom. Devrooms are a sort of mini-track within the larger conference, and ours focused on the common problems that Linux distributions, packagers, and other developers working at grand-scale community collaboration have to face.

Fedora Ambassadors at BrickHack 2016

This year, you can find the Fedora Ambassadors at their own table in the BrickHack hackerspace. The Fedora Community Action and Impact Lead, Remy DeCausemaker, Justin W. Flory, Charles Profitt, and Michael DePaulo will be representing Fedora during the event. Additionally, other local Fedora contributors and Red Hat employees will be stopping by, like Ralph Bean and Ryan Scott Brown.

Additionally, Remy will also be giving a keynote address at 4:30pm on Saturday for BrickHack 2016 about licensing for open source projects and how to contribute to open source.

Flock 2016 is coming! Flock is the annual Fedora contributor conference held every year.

Flock 2016 update: Submissions and lodging

WiTNY 2016: Event Report

January has been a rather busy month. The Women in Technology New York (WiTNY) conference was my first big conference of the new year. It is also one that falls squarely in line with one of CommOps’ big priorities for this year to increase the involvement of women and underrepresented groups within our project.

Using regular posts to social media, I was able to keep a sort of log of segments of the WiTNY journey.
