For some time now, Fedora has discussed the idea of the Fedora Outreach Steering Committee (FOSCo), a body to coordinate all our outreach efforts. Now it’s time to make it happen!

FOSCo brainstorming: you’re invited!

On behalf of FAmSCo and the Fedora Council, we would like to invite the Fedora community to an all-hands.

Why modularization matters to Sys Admins

As a systems administrator, you generally worry about two things. First, the security of the systems you support. Second, that the applications you run work as designed. You would like to do those two things with as little effort as possible, however, you want to be aware of and balance the risk inherent in meeting those goals.

Enter Fedora. Fedora curates the libraries and applications that are available to install on your local system(s). Fedora makes the promise that as soon as possible after the release of a patch or a new version of a library or an application it will make it available to you as a system administrator. However it does this by ensuring the sanctity of individual libraries. Effort is also made to ensure that dependent applications are also verified which consume that library.

As some of you may recall, Fedora added a new seat to the Fedora Council for a Diversity Adviser.

It is with great pleasure that we do hereby announce, that this seat has been filled by long-time Fedora contributor María “tatica” Leandro!

What is the Diversity Adviser?

The Fedora Diversity Adviser acts as a source of support and information for all contributors and users, especially those from underrepresented populations, so that issues of inclusion and equity can be discussed and addressed with planning and strategy.

Modularity Use Case: Application Independence

We will be writing a series of blog posts regarding the project to help the Modularity effort move forward. Some of the posts will be about “Why?” and some will be about “How?” As the first post in the series, this article is about “Why?”

The Rings Proposal and the Modularity Objective are both about big ideas and a long-term vision. And it should be all those things. Grand visions are how Fedora is what it is today.

Women in Computing and Fedora

In the past year to current day, women in computing is a hot topic in many discussions about diversity in computer science. Particularly in free and open source software, women are underrepresented, even more than average numbers in other computer science fields.

Diversity in Fedora is also a discussion that has resurfaced in the past few months, including the creation of a Fedora Diversity Adviser, a position now held by María “tatica” Leandro. As part of the objectives identified by the Fedora Council, an initiative to promote Fedora to new contributors of various backgrounds is being emphasized for 2016. Fedora has a strong and powerful base of women contributors in the community, focusing on various parts of the Project.

Looking back on 2015, there are many highlights of increased diversity in Fedora and many more plans in the future to promote a stronger presence of women in the Fedora community.

Fedora Council Update: Modularization Objective

The Fedora Council requests that the Objective Leads and top-level teams provide periodic updates to present status and progress towards the mission of Fedora. Recently, I presented the status of the Fedora Modularization Objective. If you would like to track future Council updates, follow this blog, or attend yourself! Elections Retrospective, 2015

The results are in! The Fedora Elections for the F23 release cycle of FESCo, FAmSCo, and the Council concluded on Tuesday, December 15th. The results are posted on the Fedora Voting Application and announced on the mailing lists. You can also find the full list of winning candidates below. Taking inspiration from Pingou‘s blog post “FESCo vote history“, I would also like to share some interesting statistics in this 2015 Elections Retrospective.

2015 Elections Retrospective Report

In short, voter turnout has improved in all races, and while no records have been broken, the numbers are back to our typical higher levels. A direct correlation was seen between days when we advertised voting and our most active voting days. Incumbency was a big factor in each race (all incumbent candidates were re-elected) and voters showed confidence in the candidates who were previous position-holders.

Fedora Elections are here and it’s time to vote! All candidate interviews are published.

The 2015 November / December cycle of Elections is in full swing. Voting officially began on Monday, December 7th, and ends Monday, December 14th at 11:59 UTC. Voting takes place on the Voting application website. As part of the Elections coverage on the Community Blog, most of the candidates running for seats published their interviews and established their platforms here.
