The Fedora Project has participated in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) as a mentoring organization for over a decade now. GSoC is a summer program aiming to bring more student developers into open source software development. It enables students to spend their summer break working with open source organizations on projects proposed by particpation organizations and supported by mentors. Once again, Fedora is participating again this year and is looking for project ideas.
Like any FOSS community project, Fedora relies heavily on volunteers. It is, therefore, no surprise that we’re always looking to increase our contributor base. There is always so much to be done. Of course, many teams work in harmony to keep Fedora ticking. Each team tends to have its own “on-boarding process” for newcomers, which if you’ve been around recently, you’ll have noticed CommOps has been working on improving one by one.
On 18 October 2016, we organized a workshop at the CMR Institute of Technology in Bengaluru, India. In the workshop, we covered topics of free and open source software (FOSS), Fedora, and git. FOSS Wave arrives at another destination! On 24th September 2016, we conducted an event at the Indian Institute of Technology in Indore, India. The event was a joint effort of Mozilla Indore community and FOSS Wave.

This post details how we executed planned activities for Internet of Things (IoT) in Goa, India. First, thanks to Espressotive (headed by Sudhir Shetty and CIBA) for doing all the prep work from registration to our accommodation. Over a span of three days, more than 400 students from three colleges and universities attended the event.
HackMIT is the annual hackathon event organized by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. HackMIT 2016 took place on September 17th and 18th, 2016. This year, the Fedora Project partnered with Red Hat as sponsors for the hackathon. Fedora Ambassadors Charles Profitt and Justin W. Flory attended to represent the project and help mentor top students from around the country in a weekend of learning and competitive hacking. Fedora engaged with a new audience of students from various universities across America and even the globe.
Getting the mentorship call started
Furthering the FOSS Wave initiative to prepare students for the industry, it required us to work closely with and mentor people in the right way. Bhopal, India, has a good number of contributors who want to learn about Fedora Quality Assurance (QA). I started off by helping them to start with a few QA activities.

On August 20th, 2016, I helped organize the first workshop in my college, Christ University, titled “FOSS and Fedora“. The event was a great success!
I have planned to do this for more than two months, but we didn’t have any computer science club in my college. If it was for one event, we could have done it separate, but I wanted to organize multiple workshops (open source, mobile app development, website development, competitions, robotics etc). Thus, we needed a proper platform to easily organize the events without bothering too many people.
On Friday, April 22nd, Google officially announced the participants for the 11th year of Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program. If you’re not familiar with Google Summer of Code, you can read more on the Community Blog. There were 1,205 accepted projects submitted for this year. Several open source organizations participated by offering projects for students to work on.

The applications were many and it was difficult to narrow them down. We are happy and confident with this year’s selection of participants.
Over the weekend of March 5th – 6th, 2016, the Fedora Project sponsored BrickHack 2016. BrickHack 2016 is a hackathon event hosted at the Rochester Institute of Technology. What exactly is BrickHack? The organizers describe it as the following:
March 5-6 ignites a weekend devoted to 400 designers and coders sinking 24 hours into learning, building, and creating unique projects. Mentors and industry representatives will also join the fray to lend expertise and share wisdom. The event will take place in RIT’s Gordon Field House for a centralized, communal hacking experience. Expect food, swag, and timeless brick-laden memories.
As an event sponsor, the Fedora Ambassadors of North America had a table for the event. The Ambassadors offered mentorship and assistance to BrickHack 2016 programmers, gave away some free Fedora swag, and offered an introduction to Linux, open source, and the community. This report is a recollection of some highlights from the event and also focuses on the impact we made as an event sponsor.
