What is “Top Badgers”?

“Top Badgers” is a special series on the Fedora Community Blog for 2015. In this series, we interviewed some of the top badge earners of 2015 in the Fedora Project. Not familiar with Fedora badges? No worries, you can read more about them on the Badges website.

This article features William Moreno (williamjmorenor), who clocked in at the #7 spot of badges earned in 2015, with an astonishing 44 badges! As of the writing of this article, Robbie is also the #7 all-time badge earner in Fedora.

“You earned a lot of badges this year. For you, what was the most memorable badge and why?”

For me, the Parselmouth badge is the coolest one I have earned this year. It is an amazing badge because the Fedora Project is making a great effort to bring Python3 as the default by working with the Python Community to get as many libraries ported to Python3 as possible. This is a work that benefits all the Linux and Python communities out there.

“Of the badges you earned this year, which one did you think was easiest? Hardest?”

The hardest one was the Packager Sponsor. I was not interested in become a Fedora Packager Sponsor at the beginning of the year, but I was impressed when I saw my friend Eduardo Mayorga (mayorga) become a Sponsor at only 18 years old. He motivated me to become a sponsor. For this, I ran around 25 new package reviews from September to November.

The easiest one… there are a lot of easy badges to earn, like the the Macaroon (Cookie I). It is only for chatting in IRC. The Nuancier F23 is a matter of a few clicks, but the one I really did not nothing to get it was the Tadpole badge for having a FAS account for over three years.

“What is your advice to either new or recent contributors who want to earn more badges? Any tips to success?”

There are a lot of things you can do to help the Fedora Project, and in the process, get some badges!

  1. Wiki editing
  2. Sending karma to updates
  3. Running kernel tests
  4. Voting for tags in Tagger
  5. Sending a Fedora DVD for Free Media

Badges are a great way to find how to help with Fedora. Just go to the Badges website and read the description of some badge than you want to earn. There will be a link to the Badge ticket in Trac where you can find more information about how to get it.

At the end of the day, it is not about getting more badges, it is about finding your way to help Fedora.
