Outreachy – December 2020 round : Meet the interns!

The results of Outreachy are out and our interns have been working on their tasks for a few weeks now! Outreachy is a paid, remote internship program that helps traditionally underrepresented people in tech make their first contributions to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities. Fedora is participating in this round of Outreachy as a mentoring organization. We have three interns for this round which started on mid December, 2020 and goes until March, 2021. We asked our Outreachy interns to tell us some things about themselves!

If you see them around, do say hello and share some cookies!

Ella Daniels

My name is Ella Daniels, I’m 27 years old, born in Christchurch, New Zealand, but have lived basically all my life in Israel. After many years of dead-end retail jobs, and due to the outbreak of COVID-19, I decided to re-evaluate my life and career path – one thing led to another and I discovered my passion for graphic design. So for the past few months, I have been studying graphic design on Udemy and taking on freelance design jobs as they come in. In my free time I love to listen to music, exercise and eat good food. Many hours are also spent adoring my cats.
I heard about Outreachy from my sister, who has been a mentor for the program. She encouraged me to apply to the Fedora project’s design internship. Prior to the application period I had never even heard of Fedora, but as I began to read up on the project, I fell in love with the concept.
I feel like I’ve already learned so much, and am delighted by the helpful and inclusive attitude put forth by both my mentor and the entire Fedora community. I can’t wait to learn more and make some quality contributions to Fedora!

Shreya Gupta

I am Shreya Gupta, a junior developer from India. I rave about Open Source Software and promote diversity in tech and that’s the main motivation of participating in outreachy. This is my first time working with Fedora and I am really excited about this new opportunity. I always wanted to work with Fedora but never knew how to start so really excited to be a part of it.
Outside of work, I read tonnes of books, try to capture life on my camera and bake delish.
Looking forward to having an amazing time with this amazing community.

Richard Gregory

About me, I am a self-taught software developer interested in AI and
Machine Learning. I have worked mostly with languages like Python, JavaScript,
GO, SQL; and technologies like AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Openshift, Linux,
Vagrant. In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading & writing, travelling,
listening to music (electronic, alternative-*, indie pop) and contributing to
open-source software. My experience with the Fedora project so far has been awesome. The community members are nice, welcoming and readily answer any questions I have.

Best wishes for their internship period and beyond!

We wish them all a successful journey as Outreachy interns and look forward to hearing about their experiences soon!
