Introduction

Open source communities run on contribution, and contribution runs on documentation, storytelling, and knowledge sharing. At the Fedora Project, that means the Fedora Community Blog and Fedora Magazine, two publications that give contributors a voice and give the community a way to stay informed, inspired, and connected.

This year, as part of my internship with the Fedora CommOps team at Red Hat Ireland, I got to experience that firsthand. Publishing 11 articles, running editorial campaigns, and coordinating content across sprints gave me a deep appreciation for how much thought goes into keeping Fedora’s editorial standards consistent and how much easier that journey could be for new contributors with the right tool in hand.

That’s exactly what my fellow intern Gonothi built during his Outreachy internship with the Fedora Project. In our final sprint together, we decided to share it with the community because tools that make contributions more accessible deserve to be heard. With that context in mind, I’ll hand over to Gonothi to walk you through what he built and why.

From Contributor to Outreachy Intern: My Fedora Journey Begins

Introduction

Hi, I’m Aman, a software developer and open-source enthusiast who enjoys backend development, APIs, and building tools that are useful to others.

I recently started my Outreachy internship with the Fedora community, and this is my first blog as an intern. In this post, I want to share what my first two weeks have been like, what I’ve learned so far, and what I’m looking forward to in the next phase of the internship.

I’m working on the Fedora Release Schedule Planner API, a project focused on improving Fedora’s release planning workflow by moving away from older XML-heavy processes and strengthening the current FastAPI-based API through better tests, authentication, and infrastructure integration.

2 Weeks Left: The Flock 2026 CFP Ends Feb 2

Not a goodbye, wrapping up my Fedora Project DEI internship

This isn’t a goodbye. I have mixed feelings about this, but it’s not the end. My Outreachy internship with the Fedora Project DEI team is wrapping up, but I’m here to stay. I remember my first discourse post, quoting from it: “… regardless of the outcome, I’m here to stay!” Yes, I meant it.

It’s been an awesome journey working with the community, contributing to projects that matter, and learning along the way. I’m grateful to everyone who supported me, and a special thanks goes to my mentor, Jona Azizaj.

On March 4th, 2024, the application phase kicked off for the Outreachy 2024 internship program. Fedora is proud to continue our participation in Outreachy again this year. We are offering three internships that will run from May to August 2024. This blog post is an orientation for both community members and new applicants to the Fedora community to understand Outreachy, what projects we are running this year, and some best practices for working with the Fedora community.
