A couple of weekends ago, Kanika Murarka and I (Sumantro Mukherjee) went down to the Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) in Mysore, India to give a talk on GitHub and web virtual reality (VR) on their annual open source fest, FOSS Camp.

Getting started at FOSS Camp

Thanks to Sujan K. and all the SJCE faculty for hosting us. The talk was scheduled from 2:30pm-5:30pm in one of the labs with fully equipped wireless and systems with Ubuntu / Fedora on them. After a short round of introduction, Kanika started off with git and GitHub. Arvind Chembarpu and I were assisting people who got stuck during the hands-on. This was more of a hands-on activity so all the participants ran basic commands and we explained to them how to start contributing to upstream projects.

Teaching git merging and rebasing

We broke for snacks break at around 4:00pm. After snacks, Arvind started talking about merging and rebasing with git and drew diagrams. After, it was an open floor for all students to ask questions. After the Q&A, we gave out resources which students can refer to.

Fun with web virtual reality

With not much time left, I started talking about web VR and started with basic demos and code of how to start making a basic VR app. Students were engaged and liked the things they could make with Aframe (a web framework for building virtual reality apps).
