Introducing Contributor Stories

The Fedora Project community is a strong, caring community sharing the same Four Foundations: Freedom, Friends, Features, and First. Becoming friends is a natural consequence of our work as contributors, working together to advance free software. All of us have a good memory about someone or maybe a funny or inspirational moment with another contributor.

Contributor Stories are just that: the record of our best moments with our Fedora friends. The story can be about our work in Fedora or something personal or unique which you would like to share with the community. Contributor Stories are a part of Fedora Appreciation Week, starting in November 2018.

Why have Contributor Stories?

The purpose of Contributor Stories is to recognize a contributor who has impacted you at any time in Fedora. Let them know what you are thankful for and share a common memory or experience you remember. Taking the time to single out someone to give thanks is one of the best ways to make a personal impact.

Fedora meetup at Pune – March 2018

Long time we did not had any meetup at Pune, Maharashtra, India, so we decided to get started again.  Details about this meetup are available at Fedora Wiki page.

Planning for meetup started 1 month before. Initially Ompragash proposed to have meetup.com account for Fedora Pune to get more awareness. Later dropped this plan, since this is not only Fedora Pune level topic but applicable for all Fedora events.

Event started well in time.

  • 15 Attendees were present including college students.
  • Ompragash welcomed all the attendees and had a short introduction from everyone. He delivered his first talk “Telling the Fedora Story”, in this he explained how Fedora project started.
  • Parag explained different ways to contribute in Fedora in his talk. He kept on answering queries in between, it was engaging session.

Call for maintainers: Fedora package tagger

The Fedora package tagger application is looking for new maintainers by April 5, 2018; otherwise, Fedora Infrastructure will retire the app.

Before DevConfCZ 2018, the Fedora Infrastructure team met to review the “state of the apps” in Fedora’s infrastructure. The fedora-tagger application is currently broken since the decision to retire PkgDB. The core Infrastructure team does not have bandwidth and time to focus on this application, since there are other areas to focus on at the upcoming Infrastructure Hackathon.

Deprecate TCP wrappers Test Day 2018-03-22

Thursday, 2018-03-22, is Deprecate TCP wrappers Test Day!  This insallment of Test Day will focus on testing an important change set.

Why test?

Removing this package from Fedora will remove a package from default and minimal installations (removing dependency of daemons such as SSHD). It also makes the configuration straight-forward for new users (no shared files defining access rules, poorly reporting any errors to users).

Fedora participating in Google Summer of Code 2018

GSoC is a summer program aiming to bring more student developers into open source software development. It enables students to spend their summer break working with open source organizations on projects proposed by participating organizations and supported by mentors.

The Fedora Project has participated in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) as a mentoring organization for over a decade now. Once again, Fedora is participating again this year. We are happy to be accepted again as an organization this year and are looking forward to working with many bright and excited students across the world on many parts of Fedora.
