Building community at Open Source Conference Albania (OSCAL) 2018

From May 19-20, 2018, the local open source community in Tirana, Albania organized the fifth year of Open Source Conference Albania (OSCAL). For the fifth year, the Fedora Project participated as a sponsor of this regional conference. OSCAL focuses on topics of software freedom, open knowledge, free culture, and decentralization. It attracts a range of international speakers and sponsors to a mostly local Albanian audience.

What we did at OSCAL 2018

The Fedora Project and its contributors were present in multiple areas of the OSCAL experience. Fedora took part to encourage the growth of the local Fedora community, support the efforts of existing Fedora Ambassadors and contributors, and introduce different technologies that make Fedora unique.

Fedora organized a booth and held a release party to commemorate Fedora 28. Several contributors delivered talks and workshops during OSCAL. Additionally, several Fedora contributors delivered talks and workshops across both days of the conference.

Hello from your new Fedora Program Manager

Headshot of Ben CottonHi, Fedora Community! I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself as the newly-hired Fedora Program Manager. I’ve been a Fedora user for over a decade and a contributor in various roles almost that long. I started out on the documentation team as a writer and then led the team for a few releases. I’ve also maintained packages, dabbled a little bit in marketing (I know I’m way behind on that video ticket, sorry!), and helped promote Fedora through social media and articles on Opensource.com. Professionally, my background is largely in systems administration (with a strong focus on high performance computing in public cloud), but I’ve spent the last two years in marketing. I have a bachelors degree in meteorology and a masters degree in IT project management. I’m also an organizer for a local tech meetup and an occasional freelance writer.

I’m at Red Hat headquarters right now for new hire orientation. Once that’s done, I’ll return home to Indiana and start work. Several interviewers asked what I’d do first if I got the position. Here’s my plan: I’m going to listen. Sure, I’m familiar with Fedora, but I haven’t been able to pay as much attention lately as I’d like. So before I come crashing in with a list of things I want to do, I want to get a better sense for what the community needs from me. That’s a good idea for any job, but particularly for one where I’m serving the needs of a mostly-volunteer community.

Introducing Contributor Stories

The Fedora Project community is a strong, caring community sharing the same Four Foundations: Freedom, Friends, Features, and First. Becoming friends is a natural consequence of our work as contributors, working together to advance free software. All of us have a good memory about someone or maybe a funny or inspirational moment with another contributor.

Contributor Stories are just that: the record of our best moments with our Fedora friends. The story can be about our work in Fedora or something personal or unique which you would like to share with the community. Contributor Stories are a part of Fedora Appreciation Week, starting in November 2018.

Why have Contributor Stories?

The purpose of Contributor Stories is to recognize a contributor who has impacted you at any time in Fedora. Let them know what you are thankful for and share a common memory or experience you remember. Taking the time to single out someone to give thanks is one of the best ways to make a personal impact.
