Community Outreach Revamp Objective

In June of 2020 the Community Outreach Revamp was developed. The initial plan was drafted by Marie Nordin and then edited and approved by the Mindshare Committee. Implementation began soon after by co-leads Mariana Balla and Sumantro Mukherjee. It quickly became evident that the Revamp is of monumental proportions and will take a lot of coordination, people, and hours to complete. Although Fedora rarely has non-code related Objectives, the Revamp falls under similar work-load category to other Objectives and is crucial to the future of Fedora’s community outreach.

The Community Outreach Revamp initiative held an Ask Me Anything on December 10th, 2020. Cco-leads Sumantro Mukherjee & Mariana Balla answered questions, with moderation by me (the FCAIC). Wizards and Halloween: F33 Release Party goes virtual!

Mark your calendars: the dates of the Release Party for F33 are November 6th, 7th, and 8th.

The Mindshare Committee is currently working on organizing a Release Party event to celebrate F33. We agreed it should be more of a party than a conference. So we are keeping sessions light, and fun EXTRA. We’ve already had requests for repeats of pictionary, pub quiz, and I guess we can stumble around in Mozilla Hubs too 😉

Nest with Fedora: Poll Results and Thanks!

It has been a month since we met virtually to Nest with Fedora. The event was a huge success and it is all thanks to the Fedora community. The sessions were interesting, interactive, and educational. (And the recordings are now available on the Fedora YouTube channel!) The social hours were fun and full of smiling faces. The platform exceeded expectations in a lot of ways (and under-performed in others, unfortunately). The polls provided a fun way to interact and change programming on the fly.

Most recently, I know you all have begun to receive swag bags from the event, and I hope you enjoy them! For those yet to receive, stay patient, they are on the way. Sending those out was one small way we can give a “THANK YOU!!” to the community for the passion, time, and energy you put into Fedora. Your participation made Nest with Fedora a great virtual event, and I can’t wait for more virtual events in the future!

Fedora Community Outreach Revamp: Update!

The Mindshare Comittee approved the Community Outreach Revamp proposal after incorporating input from the Fedora community. Mindshare nominated four contributors for potential co-leads for the Temporary Task Force (TTF). Two of the four nominees have capacity for the initiative: Sumantro Mukherjee and Mariana Balla. They will be leading the TTF over the course of the revamp.

Sumantro and Mariana’s primary efforts will be to help organize the multitude of tasks and communications that need to occur for the revamp to be a success. They are meeting weekly along with Marie Nordin, Fedora’s Community Action and Impact Coordinator (FCAIC). Currently, the co-leads are diving into each area of the revamp plan and adding in more concrete tasks, blockers, and taking a look at how to implement the plan strategically.

Nest With Fedora registration now open

Registration for Nest with Fedora is now open and the schedule is published! We welcome you to join us for three days of Fedora content, workshops, and social hours. Nest begins Friday 7 August at 1200 UTC and runs through Sunday 9 August at 2200 UTC. The schedule will be published in the coming days. We are using a platform called Hopin, which has been generously provided by the Apache Software Foundation.

Nest With Fedora CfP open

In a normal year, we’d be getting ready for my favorite event: Flock to Fedora. But as we’re all aware, this is anything but a normal year. Despite this—or perhaps because of this—we still want to bring the community together to share ideas, make plans, and form the bonds that put the Friends in Fedora. Instead of Flocking to Fedora, we’re going to Nest With Fedora. I’m happy to announce that the Call for Participation is now open.

The future of Fedora Community apps

The Community Platform Engineering team (formerly Community Infrastructure) indicated in July of 2019 that they have a higher workload than the team can bear. To ease this, they evaluated the applications that fit their mission statement. The applications that didn’t fit the mission were proposed for hand off to the community.

I am happy to say there is a lot being done to preserve the applications that our community values. I have been working with the Fedora Project Leader (FPL), Fedora Program Manager (FPgM), Community Platform Engineering team (CPE), and the Open Source Program Office (OSPO) at Red Hat to transition app hosting and maintenance from CPE to OSPO.

Nest with Fedora – Call for Ideas!

Hey folks! It’s that time of year where we start thinking about Flock. I am going to lay it out up front: based on the severity and ever-changing nature of COVID-19, we have to cancel this year’s edition of Flock to Fedora. We worked with our events team to evaluate the situation. No one can say at this point if conditions will support having a conference in August. Even if the public health situation improves, we understand that many of you won’t feel comfortable traveling and participating in large events.

Earn Fedora Badges designing Badges!

Fedora Badges is a perfect place to start if you want to help out the Fedora Design Team. “I’m not a designer!” “I can’t draw!” “I’ve never opened Inkscape” – you might say. And that is totally fine! Everybody can help out, and none of those reasons will stop you from designing your first badge (and getting badges for designing badges)!

Finding a Badges ticket

There are quite a few badges tickets! One might have difficulty looking for one that’s open, one that’s possible to implement, or one with a concept. So we decided to put together a list of relatively easy badges designs that are up for grabs. This post will go out about once a month and provide you with such list of badge tickets carefully selected by us!

First of all let’s look at the process of creating a badge. If you can, attend a badges workshop. If none are available, no problem! Here’s a step-by-step guide with tips. You can also ask questions on IRC (#fedora-design) or at our bi-weekly meeting every other Wednesday at 7-8 AM EST on #fedora-meeting-1 on freenode.

Once you have all the resources, read through the guide, and are ready to create, pick one of these and set yourself to owner:
