Happiness Packets and Fedora GSoC 2018

I was selected to work with Fedora on the Fedora Happiness Packets for GSoC 2018! A shout-out to Jona and Bee for helping me with the proposal and initial PRs!

About me

Hi there! My name is Anna. I go by the username Algogator on IRC and elsewhere.

  • I study computer science at the University of Texas at Arlington.
  • Python is my favorite language. Been using it for everything for the past 6 years.
  • Huge open source fan. I started a Firefox club at my university. Currently president of the Python user group at UTA (PyMavs).

What I’ll be working on and why

The Happiness Packets is an open source platform to spread gratitude and appreciation among contributors in the community. For Fedora Appreciation Week 2018, having a Fedora themed Happiness Packets site will encourage and make it easier for people to send positive feedback to their peers (anonymously if they like). I’ll be mainly working on integrating fedmsg (to award a Fedora Badge for sending a message) and adding authentication (for FAS) to the Django project. Read more about my work on Fedora Happiness Packets over the summer on my personal blog.

Fedora meetup at Pune – March 2018

Long time we did not had any meetup at Pune, Maharashtra, India, so we decided to get started again.  Details about this meetup are available at Fedora Wiki page.

Planning for meetup started 1 month before. Initially Ompragash proposed to have meetup.com account for Fedora Pune to get more awareness. Later dropped this plan, since this is not only Fedora Pune level topic but applicable for all Fedora events.

Event started well in time.

  • 15 Attendees were present including college students.
  • Ompragash welcomed all the attendees and had a short introduction from everyone. He delivered his first talk “Telling the Fedora Story”, in this he explained how Fedora project started.
  • Parag explained different ways to contribute in Fedora in his talk. He kept on answering queries in between, it was engaging session.

Call for maintainers: Fedora package tagger

The Fedora package tagger application is looking for new maintainers by April 5, 2018; otherwise, Fedora Infrastructure will retire the app.

Before DevConfCZ 2018, the Fedora Infrastructure team met to review the “state of the apps” in Fedora’s infrastructure. The fedora-tagger application is currently broken since the decision to retire PkgDB. The core Infrastructure team does not have bandwidth and time to focus on this application, since there are other areas to focus on at the upcoming Infrastructure Hackathon.

Call for Outreachy mentors for Summer 2018

The Fedora Project is looking for mentors for project for the next round of Outreachy. For those who aren’t familiar, Outreachy is a paid internship inspired by Google Summer of Code for people underrepresented in tech. Interns work remotely with mentors on projects ranging from programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, to data science.

Every idea or project needs one or two responsible mentors to teach and help the intern. Please note that Outreachy applicants are expected to make a first contribution to the project they are applying for so mentors need to have proper tasks defined for applicants to work on. Mentors should be able to commit at least 5 hours a week on most weeks from the beginning of the six-week application period (February 13, 2018) through the end of the three-month internship (End of August). You should have a real interest in their success and be engaged and excited about the project.

Bodhi: 2017 Year in Review

2017 was a busy year for the Bodhi project. This post explains a bit about what Bodhi does, highlights, and goals for 2018.

Wait, what is Bodhi?

Bodhi is designed to democratize the package update testing and release process for RPM-based Linux distributions. It provides an interface for developers to propose updates to a distribution, and an interface for testers to leave feedback about updates through a +1/-1 karma system.
